Publication Types

The following list of publication types provide background information to help the user decide which publication types have been used to develop the indexed bibliography.


abstract -- usually only one paragraph; typically an unpublished conference paper

advertisement

bibliography

book

book chapter -- only identified if the chapters are authored individually

book review -- one paragraph to one page

building code -- issued by a governmental entity or professional organization

commentary -- companion work to the building code or regulations

conference paper -- typically three to eight pages

contract drawings -- issued by a design firm for a specific project

corporate information -- similar to product information but describing technical services provided

design guide/technical manual
-- traditional procedures or professional recommendations

directory -- professional and technical resources

discussion -- follow up commentary of either a conference paper or journal article by someone other than the author of the original document

doctoral thesis

editorial

editorial correspondence
-- letters to the editor and editorial response

glossary -- only identified as such when published as a distinct document; see key words for additional glossaries

illustration -- schematic or technical drawings

internal document -- non-published, although may be available by special request

lecture/course notes
-- distributed through a professional organization's continuing education programs

literature review
-- summary of technical articles and/or report

manuscript -- unpublished document

master's thesis

news item -- one paragraph to one page

newsletter article -- items included in periodical issues in a newsletter format, usually issued by a special interest group

news/newspaper article -- either items from a newspaper or from a weekly industrial periodical, such as Engineering News Record

non-technical paper/report
-- usually generated by governmental bodies or industrial organizations and typically containing assessments of a non-technical nature

obituary -- information on a leading figure in the masonry field

pamphlet, technical -- instructional information, used for installation, assessment, or design

pamphlet, trade -- instructional information, used for installation

patent notice -- either the patent request or a summary of the scope of this information

personal communication -- letter

photograph

preface -- preface or introduction written by an author other than the document's primary author

product information -- technical and non-technical information, may include laboratory or field studies

publication list -- items in print or available by a specific publisher or professional organization

questions and answers -- technical inquiries and responses, usually written as a trade industry help column

scientific, academic journal article -- refereed technical articles

scientific, non-academic journal article -- technical articles, which may or may not be refereed but is clearly geared at an industrial, as well as an academic, audience

specification/standard -- manufacturing or installation requirements for materials or techniques

technical paper/technical report -- usually generated by governmental bodies and typically containing laboratory or field experiments

technical notes
-- either short follow up technical discussions of journal articles or brief summaries of laboratory experiments or field studies

trade journal article -- articles which are often non-technical but may contain important technical information; published predominantly for an industrial audience

trade publication -- documents generated by industrial or professional organizations, geared for industrial use

The Masonry Society database of abstracts has been put on-line so those interested in building conservation have an easily accessible way to find a significant quantity of information on preserving historic masonry buildings and monuments. However, users should be aware that The Masonry Society does not have access to most of the references in this database. Therefore Please contact your nearest university or major public library to obtain  references.
