TMS to
Cosponsor ACI Committee 122 on Energy Efficiency of Concrete and
Masonry
The Masonry Society has
accepted an invitation from the American Concrete Institute (ACI) to
co-sponsor their Committee 122 on Energy Efficiency of Concrete and
Masonry. ACI will serve as the lead sponsoring Society for this
joint committee, and TMS will assist as needed in a relationship
similar to that between ACI and TMS for ACI 216/TMS 216 on Fire
Resistance of Concrete and Masonry Structures. As such, the
committee will meet at ACI's meetings conventions and the work of
the committee will be reviewed and published by both organizations. If you have
interest in this new committee, contact TMS or ACI.

TMS Debuts
Direct Design Offerings for Masonry
Thanks to the tremendous
work from the Design Practices Committee, and generous
contributions of time from Ben Harris, Committee Chairman,
Jason Thompson, Committee Secretary, and Richard E. Klingner,
Committee member, TMS has recently released not only a new
Direct
Design Handbook for Masonry Structures, but also a 1-hour video that
overviews the use of the new Guide, and a seminar that takes
attendees step by step through the simplified design procedure.
|
|
 |
|
The Direct Design
Handbook for Masonry Structures is a
powerful new resource to help with the
design of single story concrete masonry
structures. It was recently approved by
the 2012 International Building Code
(IBC) and 2012 International Residential
Code (IRC) as an alternative design
method for masonry structures. It is
based on the Strength Design procedures
from the MSJC (TMS 402), and loads from ASCE 7,
but it offers engineers and architects an easy way to structurally
design single story concrete masonry structures. Information on this
new design guide, and the 1-hour video, are posted
here. For information on
attending or conducting a seminar, contact TMS. |

TMS and Cast
Stone Institute join efforts to develop Cast Stone Standard
The Masonry Society
recently accepted a request from the
Cast Stone
Institute (CSI) to join efforts to begin development of a design
and construction standard for cast stone. Cast stone is a masonry
product composed from fine and coarse aggregates, cement, pigments,
admixtures and water that conforms to ASTM C1364 and which provides
ornamental and functional features to buildings and other
structures. While cast stone has been used for several hundred years
in a variety of applications, the Cast Stone Institute believes that
standardizing design and construction procedures through TMS's
consensus process will provide designers and contractors with
additional resources for continued use of this innovative product.
If you would like to assist in the development of this new standard,
contact
Jan
Boyer, Executive Director of the Cast Stone Institute.

Public Comment Period is scheduled for July 1 through August 15
2010, but this timeframe may be adjusted depending on approval by the
Technical Activities Committees of TMS and ACI. If you would like to
review the proposed revisions by the Committee, watch TMS's website
(www.masonrysociety.org) for the opening of the Public Comment
