The
Masonry Society and Thompson Reuters Team to Offer Electronic
Standards |
|
MSJC, Fire Resistance and
Sound Transmission Standards to be downloadable late
this Fall
The Masonry Society has recently entered into an
agreement with Techstreet, a division of Thomson Reuters, to provide
downloadable copies of its most popular standards including:
-
2008 Masonry Standards Joint Committee’s
Masonry Structures and Specification for Masonry Structures (TMS 402/ACI
530/ASCE 5 and TMS 602/ACI 530.1/ASCE 6)
-
Code Requirements for Determining Fire
Resistance of Concrete and Masonry Construction Assemblies (ACI
216.1-07/TMS-0216-07), and
-
Standard Method for Determining the Sound
Transmission Class Rating for Masonry Walls (TMS 0302-07)
All of these standards will be referenced by the
2009 International Building Code.
Under the new arrangement, Techstreet will sell the
standards through its high-traffic web site at
www.techstreet.com and they will also build a new “TMS Download Store” for
users and members to download the standards directly from the TMS web site. Stay
tuned for a future announcement in late Fall.
Ray Miller, TMS President notes “This is a win-win
for TMS and Techstreet. TMS wants to make its standards more accessible but has
been worried about copyright protection. Techstreet provides user-friendly
e-commerce with downloadable electronic files and bulletproof copyright
protection,. Techstreet will benefit by offering TMS standards to its
substantial audience of designers, contractors, and code officials. TMS will
also benefit by broadening its exposure and increasing its revenue from these
publications.
Techstreet will encrypt Adobe “PDF” versions of
these standards with a powerful digital protection that saves the file to the
purchaser’s computer but prevents copying e-mailing, or installing the file on
networks or web sites. The purchaser will be able to print the standards for
their own use and access them electronically on their computer. If the user ever
changes computers, Techstreet provides an easy method to download a new version
to the new machine.
TMS is also exploring offering subscription services
to these standards and others through Techstreet. The goal is to provide these
and other standards more easily to users while maintaining protection of these
important Society resources from unauthorized use. These standards and possibly
others will be available for download from TMS’s website (www.masonrysociety.org)
late this Fall. Contact the office at 303-939-9700 for additional details or
visit the web site directly.
