In 2010, The Masonry Society (TMS) published a new design standard (TMS 403 – Direct Design Handbook for Masonry Structures) for the design of single-story, loadbearing, concrete masonry structures. This handbook, which is based on ASCE 7-05 load requirements, and the strength design procedures of TMS 402-08/ACI 530-08/ASCE 5-08, provides a simple and rapid procedure for the design of single-story concrete masonry structures. This seminar reviews this new handbook, its basis, the direct design procedure, and the limitations on its use. Instructors discuss how the procedure can be used to produce efficient, safe designs, more rapidly than by using conventional methods.
