The 2004 University Professors’ Masonry Workshop (UPMW) has been scheduled to be held at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina from March 7-9, 2004. The workshop is designed to assist architectural and engineering educators who teach masonry courses or hope to incorporate masonry courses or portions of courses into their curriculum. Topics discussed at the workshop will include educational issues in general, how individual professors teach masonry, course curricula at various universities, masonry materials, codes and standards, detailing, and performance. As in past workshops, separate tracks for architectural and engineering issues will be featured. In addition, another track dedicated to Construction Management is also being considered if sufficient interest is expressed. A hands-on demonstration will allow attendees to try laying brick and concrete masonry, and to see how reinforcement, flashing, ties and anchors are placed in masonry walls. Attendees will also receive a comprehensive library of masonry teaching aids and technical resources.

Attendees at the 2004 University Professors Masonry Workshop will have the opportunity to see the beautiful architecture on the North Carolina State University campus, such as Brooks Hall, shown on the right. Brooks Hall.GIF (139234 bytes)

Also, as TMS prepares for the Workshop, we are collecting course descriptions from professors currently presenting masonry classes. If you do, and are willing to share this information with other professors, please fill out the Course Introductory Sheet, along with a sample course outline, and e-mail them to TMS.

In addition to the workshop, two optional half-day seminars may be offered after the workshop for professors interested in focusing on masonry in more depth, as well as for local designers. If conducted, these seminars will likely cover the Strength Design of Masonry and the Masonry Building Envelope.
