The 11th North American Masonry Conference, which was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota earlier this month, drew over 180 attendees from 26 countries to disseminate information on masonry behavior, design, construction, and evaluation. The conference began with a enjoyable reception where attendees were able to get to know one another better, while learning more about the Twin Cities. Excellent educational programs were given throughout the conference and presentations on approximately 110 papers and posters were presented. In addition, 3 interesting keynote addresses were presented by David Biggs (Innovation in the Masonry Industry: What Would Steve Jobs Do?), Wolfram Jaeger (Views, Philosophy and Experience on Retrofitting ) and Jason Ingham (Performance of Masonry Buildings in the 2010/2011 Canterbury Earthquake Swarm), and Norman Weiss of Columbia University presented a captivating keynote address at the Awards Banquet. Target Corporation provided an overview of their work with masonry over a luncheon session and 3 educational seminars on Special Inspection of Masonry, Sustainable Design using Masonry, and Masonry Structural Software were given. An evening with the Minnesota Orchestra was a highlight of the conference, providing attendees with a beautiful evening out while listening to symphonic music with friends. The Awards Banquet featured an excellent meal followed by the presentation of several awards as noted below. Additional information on the awards can be obtained by clicking the links below. Photographs from the conference can be accessed here.

Proceedings from the conference that include 129 technical papers are available from TMS in both electronic and printed forms. Thanks are due to:

  • the local steering committee of Arturo Schultz, Steve Weeks, Olene Bigelow, and Jennifer Bean Popehn.

  • the generous Sponsors (click here for a listing)

  • the authors, reviewers, attendees, steering committee members, student volunteers, and supporters of the NAMC.

During the Awards Banquet, Gregg Borchelt presented the 2011 James L. Noland Student Fellowship Award on behalf of TMS’s Scholarship Committee to Timothy Gregor who is researching Hybrid Masonry via a Large-Scale Experimental Test under the direction of Dr. Daniel P. Abrams at the University of Illinois. During his presentation, Borchelt noted that TMS had received 6 excellent nomination packages for the scholarship. The $3,000 award will be paid to Mr. Gregor in two installments of $1,500 each. The first installment was presented at the NAMC and the second installment will be paid for the semester beginning January 2012.

The Noland Fellowship was established in 1995 to honor the memory of Dr. James L. Noland who was instrumental in the early stages of TMS, serving as its Executive Director and co-chairing the First North American Masonry Conference. The Noland Fellowship is awarded every four years to a graduate student who is doing research on masonry related to materials, structures, architecture or construction. The next fellowship will be likely be awarded at, or possibly before, the 12th North American Masonry Conference.

Howard Noziska, Chairman of the 11th NAMC Awards Committee presented the 11th North American Conference Outstanding Paper Awards. Noziska reported that choosing award winning papers was difficult due to the many excellent papers submitted for the conference. Awards were presented to:

  • “Seismic Performance of Masonry Veneer in Wood-Frame Structures” by Hussein Okail, P. Benson Shing, Richard E. Klingner, Seongwoo Jo, W. Mark McGinley, and David I. McLean

  • “Allowable Stress Recalibration in the 2011 TMS 402” by Richard M. Bennett, Edwin T. Huston, David I. McLean, and Diane B. Throop

  • “Brick Beyond Boundaries” by Richard Filloramo, Mack Scogin, Jennifer Pindyck, Michael Filisky, and David Biggs

  • “Performance of Brick in Field Freeze-Thaw Exposure to That Predicted by Physical Properties and Freeze-Thaw Tests” by J. Gregg Borchelt and Brian E. Trimble.

Papers receiving honorable mention included:

  • “Splice Provisions for Deformed Reinforcement Surrounded by Grout in AAC Masonry” by Miguel Forero Henao and Richard E. Klingner

  • “Fragility Curves for In-Plane Seismic Performance of Reinforced Masonry Walls” by Juan Murcia-Delso and P. Benson Shing

  • “Shear Design of Reinforced Masonry Beams” by Salah R. Sarhat and Ted Sherwood

Amde M. Amde, of the University of Maryland who serves as Editor of TMS Journal, presented TMS Journal Outstanding Paper Awards.  Eligible papers were published in TMS Journal between September 2007 and December 2010 and included more than 30 papers published in six TMS Journals.  Amde presented awards to:

  • “Out-of-Plane Flexural Strength of Unreinforced Clay Brick Masonry Walls" by M.C. Griffith and J. Vaculik; published in Volume 25, Number 1 .

  • “Effect of Moisture on FRP-Masonry Bond Strength" by D. D. Stierwalt and H. R. Hamilton III; published in Volume 26, Number 1.

  •  “In-Plane Seismic Response of Reinforced Concrete Masonry Shrinkage Control Joints" by Jason Ingham, Gavin Wight and KC Voon; published in Volume 26, Number 1.

  •  “Performance of Lap Splices in Concrete Masonry Shear Walls" by Jon Z. Mjelde, David I. McLean, Jason J. Thompson and W. Mark McGinley; published in Volume 27, Number 1.

In addition, while officially awarded in 2010, Max Porter, Chairman of TMS’s Research Committee presented Paulo Lourenco with the 2010 John B. Scalzi Research Award.
