The 11th North
American Masonry Conference, which was held in
Minneapolis, Minnesota earlier this month, drew over 180
attendees from 26 countries to disseminate information
on masonry behavior, design, construction, and
evaluation. The conference began with a enjoyable
reception where attendees were able to get to know one
another better, while learning more about the Twin
Cities. Excellent educational programs were given
throughout the conference and presentations on
approximately 110 papers and posters were presented. In
addition, 3 interesting keynote addresses were presented
by David Biggs (Innovation in the Masonry Industry: What
Would Steve Jobs Do?), Wolfram Jaeger (Views, Philosophy
and Experience on Retrofitting ) and Jason Ingham
(Performance of Masonry Buildings in the 2010/2011
Canterbury Earthquake Swarm), and Norman Weiss of
Columbia University presented a captivating keynote
address at the Awards Banquet. Target Corporation
provided an overview of their work with masonry over a
luncheon session and 3 educational seminars on Special
Inspection of Masonry, Sustainable Design using Masonry,
and Masonry Structural Software were given. An evening
with the Minnesota Orchestra was a highlight of the
conference, providing attendees with a beautiful evening
out while listening to symphonic music with friends. The
Awards Banquet featured an excellent meal followed by
the presentation of several awards as noted below.
Additional information on the awards can be obtained by

During the Awards Banquet,
Gregg Borchelt presented the 2011
James L. Noland Student Fellowship Award
on behalf of TMS’s Scholarship Committee to Timothy
Gregor who is researching Hybrid Masonry via a
Large-Scale Experimental Test under the direction of Dr.
Daniel P. Abrams at the University of Illinois.
During his presentation, Borchelt noted that TMS had
received 6 excellent nomination packages for the
scholarship. The $3,000 award will be paid to Mr. Gregor
in two installments of $1,500 each. The first
installment was presented at the NAMC and the second
installment will be paid for the semester beginning
January 2012.
The
Noland Fellowship was established in 1995 to honor the
memory of Dr. James L. Noland who was instrumental in
the early stages of TMS, serving as its Executive
Director and co-chairing the First North American
Masonry Conference. The Noland Fellowship is awarded
every four years to a graduate student who is doing
research on masonry related to materials, structures,
architecture or construction. The next fellowship will
be likely be awarded at, or possibly before, the 12th
North American Masonry Conference.
Howard Noziska, Chairman
of the 11th NAMC Awards Committee presented
the
11th North American Conference Outstanding

award winning papers was difficult due to the many
excellent papers submitted for the conference. Awards
